THE LITHUANIAN ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY (LOS),

a non-governmental organisation, uniting Lithuanian people who take care of nature preservation, watch birds and their environment, engage in its preservation and public ecological education, also take civic part in policy making for protection of environment and biodiversity.

Since 1994, the LOS is an affiliate member of BirdLife International, a global partnership of conservation organisations uniting partners from over 100  countries   that strive to conserve birds and their habitats.

We believe joint efforts, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience of the Society members will facilitate more efficient and realistic implementation of protection of birds and their environment, as well as of the entire wildlife around us.

The LOS is a non-governmental organisation, registered with an association status. It is the largest environmental  membership organisation in our country.

Any citizen paying the membership fee may become its member.

The LOS unites various people: professional researchers, birdwatchers, naturalists, farmers, foresters, teachers, schoolchildren, students and others who care for nature.

Join us, become a LOD member!

It does not matter that you have just started to take interest in birds, to learn an interesting world of theirs, join the like-minded and support protection of birds and their living environment. Anyone who loves birds and wildlife, does not feel unconcerned about their future may become a LOD member.

We can achieve more together!

THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE DZŪKIJA NATIONAL PARK AND ČEPKELIAI STATE NATURE RESERVE (DNP)

The Čepkeliai-Dzūkija National/PAN Park, consisting of the Čepkeliai State Nature Reserve and the Dzūkija National Park where the natural ecosystems of the Dainava wood are preserved, is one of the 13 PAN parks in Europe. Travelling in the Dzūkija National Park (58519 ha) visitors see pine trees everywhere around: on the dune tops or slopes of river valleys, in the wavy plains or marshes. However, a very unique and rich natural world  is hiding beneath this monotonous veil: flooded and transitional meadows, raised bogs and fens, sand dunes and vigorous rivers have become habitats for abundant rare plants and animals.

The nucleus of the Dainava wood is the biggest pristine natural area (11212 ha) in Lithuania preserved in the Čepkeliai Reserve, founded in 1975, and since 1993  - a Ramsar site.

Besides the largest raised bog (5858 ha) in Lithuania, Čepkeliai also includes lowland sedge bogs and black alder areas, dry Cladinoso-callunosa forests, bog islands and lakes. Wolves and lynx, Black Grouses and Western Capercaillies, Lady's Slippers and pasque flowers (Pulsatilla patens) are only a tiny part of more than  4000  species found in the area.

The Park‘s area is notable for its rich cultural heritage: villages of local people of Dzūkija that have preserved traditional architectural features, original mode of life of local people.
